Is recycled swimwear worth it?

Almost every swim trunk worth wearing is polyester — it dries fast, holds color, and survives chlorine. So when a brand says its swimwear is “recycled”, the honest question is: what actually changes, and is it worth paying for? Here is our answer, for our own pieces, with the parts that are not flattering included.

What recycled polyester is

Recycled polyester is made from existing plastic — mostly used bottles — that is cleaned, melted and spun back into fiber instead of drawing new crude oil for fresh plastic. The end fabric performs the same as virgin polyester: same strength, same quick-dry, same stretch when it is woven with spandex. You are not buying a lesser garment. You are choosing what the fabric was before it was fabric.

What it honestly does not change

It is not a magic material. Recycled polyester still sheds microplastics in the wash, just like virgin polyester, and it still will not biodegrade in a landfill. A swim garment’s real environmental score is mostly decided by how many summers it survives — which is also an argument for a $65 pair you keep, over three cheap pairs that fade.

Where our pieces stand

Our Swim Trunks ($65, shipping included) are 91% recycled polyester and 9% spandex, cut and sewn from the printed roll after you order, either in the US or the EU depending on where you live. The Bikini ($55) is 88% recycled polyester with UPF 50+ when it is fulfilled in the EU — but the US bikini base fabric is ordinary polyester, because that is what our print partner stocks there. If recycled fabric is the reason you are buying, order the trunks anywhere, and the bikini from Europe.

So, worth it?

If you expect recycled swimwear to feel different, no — you will not notice anything in the water. If you care that a garment started life as a bottle instead of fresh plastic, and you were going to buy well-made trunks anyway, then yes: it costs you nothing extra and it is the better fabric to pick. That is exactly why we chose it for this drop. How the fabric gets its print is a separate story — we explain that in how all-over print swim trunks are made.
